Habibti

By: Jenna Hamdan

In my mother lives every woman who has taught me love

She shows me all I miss

Her voice is soft and it is loud

It knows all the answers

It sticks to me

Like revlon sticks to Kirtan

In my mother lives my home

In my mother lives my teta

My grandmother

She used to make me mansaf

Ask me why I didn’t eat all the food

“Yelluh habibti you eat this much”

Jihan makes the mansaf now

I think it’s just as good

I can’t remember anymore

In my mother lives me

A carbon copy

She loves me more than I can love myself

I tell her she does not know me more than I know me

I am beginning to think that is not true

In my mother lives every woman who has taught me love

She shows me all I miss

In my mother lives my home
